Formaldehyde Is Still a Common Pollutant, Damages Cells & DNA
Formaldehyde, a chemical still commonly present in household and cosmetics products, is already considered to be a DNA mutagen and a known human carcinogen. Now, new research shows that it can also interfere with the epigenetic programming of cells.
Epigenetics are chemical mechanisms that control the activity of genes. They allow cells – as well as tissues and organs – to adapt to changing conditions but can be altered by certain toxins. Some epigenetic changes lead to cancer, which could explain the carcinogenic properties of formaldehyde.
The research focused on the effects of relatively high concentrations of formaldehyde in the body, taking into account that it can easily reach all the cells in the body after exposure. Overall, researchers determined that formaldehyde is “a powerful modifier” of normal epigenetic patterns.
"International health authorities are already restricting the use of formaldehyde as much as possible,” said Dr. Manel Esteller, research collaborator, “but there are still areas of work where high levels of it are used, such as in the manufacture of resins, the production of plastic, industrial foundries or the cosmetics industry.” (For more, see article ‘How to Greatly Reduce Your Formaldehyde Exposure’ below ↓)
Men Are Now Expected to Live 6 Years Less Than Women
Women in the U.S. now have a life expectancy that is 5.8 years longer than men, according to a recent research analysis. This means that the life expectancy gap between men and women is the largest since the year 1996, leading some experts to label this a “men’s health crisis.”
Data for the analysis came from National Center for Health Statistics records. Overall life expectancy (both men and women) fell for the second consecutive year, and the gap between men and women continued to increase from a low of 4.8 years in 2010.
The study authors noted many possible contributing factors to the fall in life expectancy for men, including crises like overdose deaths and homicides affecting more men than women. Riskier health behaviors – like smoking and excessive alcohol consumption – also contribute to lower male longevity.
Health experts also point out that men’s health often takes a “backseat” due to societal pressures and norms, while women are more likely to engage in health-promoting behaviors and take a proactive / preventive approach to their health.

6 Amazing Benefits of Green Tea for Your Skin
Green tea has been enjoyed for centuries as a longevity-promoting beverage, but it also has numerous skincare benefits. The powerful antioxidants in green tea, including EGCG, have shown potential for improving skin elasticity and even reactivating dying skin cells. Plus, they possess anti-inflammatory properties that may help combat puffiness and breakouts. Some research indicates that green tea may also help to protect collagen, giving it anti-aging power for the skin. (More)
Workplace Flexibility May Lower Heart Disease Risk
Though standard 9-5 jobs are still incredibly common, there’s an increasing amount of flexibility in some areas of the workforce, especially with the rise of remote work possibilities. This could be surprisingly good news for heart health as a recent study found that greater workplace flexibility – specifically aimed at improving work-life balance – could improve aspects of cardiometabolic health for those at high risk for heart disease. Gut Microbiota Can Prevent or Create Prostate Inflammation
Research has already made it clear that the health of your gut is connected (for better or worse) to many other systems in your body. A new study has revealed yet another possible gut connection by finding that gut microbiota may either help prevent or promote an “inflammatory microenvironment” in the prostate gland. Though no specific gut bacteria have been identified in this process yet, taking general steps to improve gut health could help prostate health as well. (More)
High-Intensity Water Exercise Can Help People with Chronic Conditions
For many people with chronic health conditions, especially pain-related ones, normal high-intensity workouts are challenging at best and out of reach for many. However, a new study has found that aquatic high-intensity interval training (AHIIT) can be an excellent alternative, since it relieves pressure on joints while also providing the same benefits as land-based exercise. Beneficial effects were noted for a range of conditions, including chronic musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological disorders. (More)
7 Pancreatitis Symptoms to Know About + Key Diet Tips
Pancreatitis occurs when the pancreas, a large gland located behind the stomach, gets inflamed. Symptoms are often acute and include severe pain in the abdomen that radiates to the back, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, fever or chills, and a fast heartbeat. Medical attention is usually required for pancreatitis, but focusing on high protein and low fat foods – like beans, lentils, clear soups, and whole grains – can help with recovery and lower the chance of another attack.
